The Miradouro da Gra\u00e7a is located within one of Lisbon\u2019s most emblematic and protected heritage areas \u2014 the Convent of Gra\u00e7a, Lisbon Walls, and S\u00e3o Jorge Castle. The site\u2019s distinct character, including its iconic grove of trees forming a valuable environmental canopy, required a sensitive and well-integrated approach. <\/p>\n

Following specialized technical studies, the installation of the funicular was executed using a reinforced concrete structure designed to follow the hillside\u2019s natural slope with a constant inclination, including a tunnel section at the Miradouro station. Excavations reached a maximum depth of approximately 11 meters.\nTo accommodate varying structural behaviors, the project was divided into four independent sections, separated by expansion joints:
\n1 - Rua dos Lagares Station
\n2 - Intersection with Jardim da Cerca da Gra\u00e7a
\n3 - Beamed Slab Section
\n4 - Arrival Station at Miradouro da Gra\u00e7a<\/p>\n

Two boarding platforms were built \u2014 one at the upper station and one at the lower \u2014 with a machine room near the lower station housing the drive unit and all control equipment.<\/p>\n

The Rua dos Lagares Station includes a ground floor (Level 0), a basement roughly 3 meters deep (Level \u20131), and a funicular shaft extending more than 9 meters (Level \u20132). The structure features two roof levels: one covering the entrance and the inclined section, and another forming the main roof about 9 meters above ground level.
\nAt the Miradouro da Gra\u00e7a Arrival Station, part of the excavation was carried out using the Munich Wall method, forming a U-shaped retaining structure open to the west. The wall transitions from a U-shaped section (Levels 0 to \u20131) connected by a tie beam to a rectangular closed section (Levels \u20131 to \u20132), where increased earth pressure required thicker walls.<\/p>\n

This project, part of the \u201cPlan for Gentle and Assisted Access to the Castle Hill\u201d, significantly improved accessibility while preserving the area\u2019s historic character. The intervention enhanced both the social and urban value of this iconic location, revitalizing its touristic appeal and reinforcing its importance as a heritage landmark.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\t\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div> \n<\/div><\/div>\n\t\t
